We stayed at a resort about 20 minutes north of Playa Del Carmen. Used a cab service and asked the driver to take us to a local restaurant that served good food. This is the place he took us to, smack on la Quinta Avenida (5th Avenue) very popular touristic avenue full of shops and restaurants and street performers etc...
La Parrilla is a very nice restaurant, very opened and aerated.
Because it's opened, you still get a good view of traffic, also view the the 5th avenue and the everyday life and often get some street performers too. We chose the upstairs with top view on the street. Occasionally yes you have that one car or motorcycle with loud muffler etc but that part of the everyday noise so wasn't a negative in my view.
The servers speak decent English and are very nice, friendly and professional. They'll occasionally drop a joke here and there but nothing offensive or outrageous. They took our order for drinks and then appetizers.
I knew this place would be good as we ordered chips and guacamole and they literally make that guac in front of you, throwing in all the spices and condiments and avocado and mix it up for you. Best guacamole I've ever had bar none. And we lived in Texas for years and had our fix of TexMex. Not even close.
The appetizers were delicious and then came the main dish we ordered and all of it was just so good we wanted more. Definitely recommend the place.
Even had a mariachi guy with a guitar playing some very popular tunes like La Bamba, Cancion dEl Mariachi (from the movie Desperado sung by Antonio Banderas), Guantanamera etc... Now be mindful they already slap a "fee" on the receipt that's a tip (service fee) but we still left extra since you never know how these are distributed.
All in all excellent place to grab either a quick bite or just eat good food and enjoy drinks.
And they don't wimp out on alcohol in their drink. They load it. One margarita from there might take you over the edge so be mindful of that.
Give this place a try.

The food is amazing! The margaritas (mango) hit the spot on a hot day!
The chips were super fresh and the green sauce was really good — I even added it to my fajitas
The Aztec soup was sooooo good. Dare I even say better than Tortilla soup.
Vegetarian fajitas with cheese was to die for!!!! I would eat that every single day. Great presentation and the flavors were next level.
Sit upstairs and enjoy the view of 5th, excellent spot for people watching.
There is also a mariachi band you can have play at your table if you like.
Note: they do include gratuities on your check u0026 it is a little higher prices for tacos
These servers are really busy, if you ask for your food to go, make sure it is understood by both parties — I only had two small fajitas from that massive order and asked for the rest to go … it was not fully understood and they threw all of it away ???????? I was really not happy because the food was so good and I don’t waste food ever.
He brought me a small box which was obviously not my food, just some veggies taken quickly, and maybe enough for two more if I stretched it. Well, it ended up raining so I was waiting downstairs to leave .. he could tell I was upset even with my mask and and brought me a bigger box to go. Happy for the rain to make the miscommunication work out for us both.

Food was okay, steaks were better than Mexican entrees. Some food came out barely warm. Employees and music were great, but you wait a while for service, which may explain warm food. Salsa was good, our friends enjoyed the flan and drinks were ice cold.

Service was great but food was wack. Prices were pretty much the same as I would get in a Mexican restaurant in Atlanta.

The most horrible food we tasted in Mexico. Bland tasteless overpriced rubbish. We couldn’t eat it. And they added 100+pesos on top as a tip! We had to argue about it , so in the end they removed the tip from the bill. Rude waiter wasn’t very happy lol. Avoid this place at all costs. They not even deserve 1 star! Wasted our money and left hungry, they ruined our evening.

Today they were very busy. Had to wait a long time to order. Then chips and salsa came 45 minutes after sitting and food about 1 hour after sitting. Chicken enchiladas had tasteless sauce. Molcajete had nice ingredients but there was no sauce or soup so very plain flavor. Nice view of the boulevard from the 2nd floor. Cocktail was ok.
