If you're planning on fly fishing, bring your own gear.
I've tried them twice now, both with guide Jose. What's interesting is both outfits "Cancun Fly Fishing" and "Cancun Light Tackle and Fly Fishing" are the same thing. I've booked both and both times ended up with the same guide, Jose with same boat... etc.
The last trip, Martin supplied two rods. Once we got out on the water, we noticed the large eyelet on the rod was broken. So luckily we had the other rod. That rod's fly line was so bad it wouldn't shoot through the guides. Jose could see it as well. So he called the other guide and we met him out on the water and changed out the rods with an extra one he had. I find it a bit inexcusable to promote using the best equipment, to then get out on the water and be stuck with old junk that hasn't been well taken care of. The fly lines felt like they were 10 years old.
I'll note that Jose is super nice but was a bit limited on advice. Only tips were, "Cast to the mangroves". Over and over.
So my suggestions if you're planning on booking a trip is to use your own gear, and don't expect a whole lot of advice. But Jose and the other guide will find the fish. You just need to catch them!
