Look... this is not the Ritz Carlton or Hilton, nor is it a Red Roof Inn in rural Kentucky. It's not fair to review it against those places. Judge it for what it is: a small local hotel in a popular tourist destination.
Firstly, the location: central to everything you want to do in Playa. Smack dab in the center of everything. You can mostly walk to all popular destinations including the beach. The rooms are spacious and have balconies. They are clean, well lit, well furnished, and have a cute aesthetic. The Waldorf it is not. Rooms are sun-drenched but have blackout curtains. Shower is spacious and cute bug yes, water doesn't get very hot. Maybe it's a cultural thing locally. Each room has a mini-split AC and ceiling fan, small fridge, cable TV, etc. The sinks are in an open are outside the toilet/shower. Personally, I don't like that but again - maybe it's a cultural thing down here. It's fine. There are no conference centers, fancy in-house coffee shops, massage centers, hairdressers, room service, bellhops nor Maitre D that will sneak you into shows for a tip. Don't throw shade on the place for that.
It's a value hotel, with excellent rooms, in an exceptional location for a great low price. It's cutely decorated with a Spanish villa vibe.
The staff is very accommodating and super friendly even if you don't speak Spanish. The daily cleaning staff go above and beyond to refresh your room and keep it spotless. I should mention that they heroically unclog toilets with neary a complaint. The pool is clean and adorable - surrounded by lush vegetation and balconies. Yes, that does block a lot of sunlight. There is a decent restaurant abutting the pool - bound by the street on its other side. Endless pool/beach towels are provided but you do have to sign for those and bring the back. There is a room tax of 150 Pesos in top of what you may have paid.
Couple of minor issues: The beds are hard. The pillows are tiny but they will give you more free of charge if you ask. Garbage cans are tiny but emptied daily. Again, i don't like their sinks separate from the toilet/shower. The doors use spring-latch domestic Quikset locks and they only gave us one key. They are wood with wood jams.Maybe you could ask for another key - not sure. Point is, these are not high-security entry ways. They can easily be jimmied with any credit card. As a person who travels with lots of expensive electronics including a high-priced DSLR, this worried me. Everything was fine though.
