Hostal El Nagual Hostel Backpackers San Cristobal de las Casas

I unfortunately had a mixed feeling in this hostel. On the one hand, there were interesting people around and I was part of very interesting conversations.

On the other hand, I was robbed by a guest. First, the management tried to help me and also offered me a night for free. Which I found positive at first. 2 nights after I was robbed, the guest again tried to break into my locked locker at night while I was sleeping. When I woke up to the sounds, this one quickly left the room, which just seemed very suspicious to me.

After I tried to confront this guest the next day, he of course denied everything. But the management didn't want to do anything about it, at least I was allowed to change the room.

Later I found out that there was an offer, if you stayed 7 nights, you got one night for free. When I approached the management about it because I was there for 7 nights, I was more or less laughed at when I approached them to get the promised free night. This situation unfortunately left me with bad feelings and prompted the writing of this review. I have not experienced such an unpleasant situation in my many years of hostel experience.

So please be careful.

Really enjoyed my stay here at El Nagual, I have zero complaints. Rooms are cosy, price is very reasonable and the roof top area is very chill. Would stay here again coming back to San Cristobal

We walked by and asked for a price for a room with private bathroom. We were told 200 peso. When we came back to check in, we were shown only rooms with shared bathroom for the same price. The same person repeated the price of 200, but for shared bathroom. Perhaps a misunderstanding? We chose one and said we will stay even though we felt the hostal had a weird vibe as it was late. Then the guy said that it's actually 300 for 2 people. After repeating the price 200 several times. What?! We left.

Super social friendly place,great location, affordable,awsome roof top to enjoy the sun !

I have stayed more than once at this hostel, usually for a couple of weeks at a time.
The owners are amazing people, super friendly and helpful in any way.
The place always has volunteers from all over the world which makes your stay here feel like you are moving all around the world!

My preferred place is the rooftop where every morning lots of people do yoga, meditation, dance, read or just chill out while having breakfast under the sun (or rain sometimes)!

I think this hostel was nice 1-2 years ago. But it didn't look, that somebody take care on it...

Positive: Silvia was really nice and friendly,told us everything we needed to know and we got a pretty room in the very back of the patio,quiet and very green. Negative: The bed was not the comfiest and it was a bit cold in the night.
