This place is spectacular! A beautiful hacienda with a luscious green garden, sandstone walls, fairy lights with stairs leading up to the restaurant, and to the breathtaking view. I felt as though I were on the Amalfi Coast in Italy. I went twice in one week, to take advantage of the Restaurant Week menu, as it is a little on the pricey side (ie a bottle of sparkling or still water costs $138 pesos and a can of coke costs $68). The service from the waiters was wonderful, they speak both Spanish and English and are professional and friendly. All the meals I tried were tasty and well-portioned. They had a band playing folk-music on one evening and a mariachi band on another. Both added to the magical, romantic atmosphere. I would highly recommended trying this place at least once!
The only reason I gave it 4 stars is because on the first evening I went, I went with a friend. We didn’t make a reservation because even though on their website it said that reservations were encouraged, we were going early (6pm) and when we checked Open Table for availability they had numerous tables available. However when we were greeted by the hostess she asked us for the reservation name. When we told her we didn’t have one, she acted very annoyed and told us they didn’t have any tables. My friend mentioned we’d just checked and the hostess cut her off and said she would prepare a table for us but in the future please make a reservation. She had us wait at the door while she prepared the table and when we went upstairs to our table there were only 2 other groups of people and numerous free tables. The hostess was overall not pleasant or friendly towards us which was a shame.
However when I went a few days later with my husband (I made a reservation this time!), she was super friendly, offered us a tour of the hacienda and to take photos of us etc. She was really lovely.
I’m not sure if she was having a bad day or something but I feel like there should be more consistency with how she treats customers. I feel that just because we didn’t make a reservation the first time, it didn’t warrant for that kind of service.
Overall, regardless of the initial cold service from the hostess, I would definitely recommend Hacienda San Ángel!
