Great local food! This is right outside the Rosewood Hotel alongside 4-5 other restaurants. I came here for lunch in a group of 12.
There’s no air conditioning but the breeze comes through. We got the typical traditional Puebla dishes -
* chile en nogada (stuffed poblano pepper in nut sauce and pomegranate)
* cecina (thin, marinated salted beef)
* green enchiladas
* caldo (soup) with chili
* mole with pork (cerdo)
* chalupas combinadas (chalupas with red salsa, green salsa, mole)
The bread with avocado and cheese is not complimentary - I think it was like 60 pesos per order, and they brought out 2 orders without asking. Deducting a star for that and the ambiance, or lack thereof.
75 pesos for 2 Palomas (citrus juice with alcohol and salt rim) or 2 sangrias during happy hour. Yes to the Palomas, even though it was made with lemon and not grapefruit juice. The agua fresca of lemon and chia seeds was refreshing too.
Now the food is excellent. I don’t think I had a favorite. They’re all very different. The only thing I wouldn’t get again are the chalupas. Fried dough doesn’t appeal too much to me.
The cecina was too salty for me, but I still enjoyed the flavor.
The sweetness of the Chile en Nogada threw off my friends, but I liked it. Reminded me of Persian dishes like fesenjan.
The mole was sweeter than I’m used to but was delicious, and the soup and enchiladas were great, too.
The service is slow but the grandpa owner is the third generation owner whose grandma established the restaurant - and his grandchildren currently work at the restaurant, so 5 generations have been pouring into this establishment. Hearing the story makes it a part of the experience.
So yeah! Recommended for food - perhaps even more so at dinner time when it’s not so hot outside :)
