Allocated at such an amazing spot, having high exposure, and placed at every tourist’ reference, I had much much higher expectations.
We stepped in during Saturday lunch time with dining room been practically empty. Even though we have been placed at the table by waiter’s station, countless people been constantly running behind my back, destroying the ambiance.
As a starter they served beans warmed spread with melted cheese on it. Seriously? Beans purée in what’s supposed to be top notch prime steakhouse?
I asked for wine by the glass recommendations and it appears that no one could articulate anything beyond “good wine” in English. All 3 wines offered by the glass been ugly. We had later English speaking gentlemen from management asked us if everything is ok, but it couldn’t fix a broken flow. Also the waiter doesn’t know that it’s inappropriate to poor leftovers from one bottle and fill up from another, especially in a front of a customer!
The bunch of waiters been circulating around and it didn’t allow enough time and room to go through the menu, especially considering inconvenience browsing through menu on a phone (COVID). Too much movement and people for so little outcome.
The tomato soup was just nothing special, the one I buy for $5 at home premade in supermarket has much deeper and more pleasant flavor.
The meat I received was unimpressive to say the least, a primitive aka beginner culinary student type of cooking, blunt, salted, unevenly cooked, thin and unimpressive, especially for the price and pretentions .
No steak sauce, no chimmichuri, no adjika, nothing...
In short, Sonora Prime is a tourist trap, with absolutely no skills on water’s side and equally unskilled on cooking end. In my 7 days culinary tryout in Mexico City, this was outright the worst experience. It’s about the same level of refinement as you find in US “steakhouses” at every street mall, just here it’s 5-times the price. It’s especially appalling as there are some VERY great places serving top quality meat dishes around the town. Avoid.
