So I am due for my DMV drivers license renewal and I wanted to have my vision checked because I haven't had an eye exam in a long time. I work on the computer frequently and get eye strain.
I called around to a few different eye clinics -- prices for exams ranged from free (Costco Optical -- exam is free when you purchase the glasses) to $45. Centro Optico Revolucion quoted me $25 for an exam over the phone.
When we arrived, it was a nice office. Many name brand frames Ray Ban, Oakley, etc on display.. I signed in for a walk-in eye exam. The assistant seemed to be training because she was shadowed by a more knowledgeable associate and didn't seem that sure of the procedure.
I explained how I have one eye slightly stronger than the other, and how I get eye strain. I asked if I could just pay for the exam and get my prescription because I wasn't ready to purchase glasses today, if I needed them. She said of course, that was fine.
They had me do one machine that automatically measured my vision, and then had me read one line of a projected eye chart with each eye covered. That was the extent of the exam which took all of less than 10 minutes. They didn't measure my peripheral vision, or my eye pressure. No option for a dilation.
The associate told me my vision was perfect and that I needed reading glasses or progressives and then moved into sales mode. I explained I've gotten a prescription in the past at another place that actually corrected my stronger eye and gave me better than 20/20 vision. She seemed to say that wasn't an option.
I explained again that I didn't want to purchase any glasses today and she wrote out the prescription and then began writing the receipt for the exam -- at the cost of $20. I assumed it was because the exam took all of ten minutes and she was giving me a break, but immediately the older woman at the desk told her "no I told him $25 on the phone". So she had to tear up the receipt and re-write it for $5 more. So I assume you can get an exam for $20 here.
Overall it was a 2 star experience, a very lacking exam, and I am docking a star because they jerked me around on the billing at the end.
My wife had previously gone to Codet Vision for her eye exam and they have state of the art equipment and the price isn't too expensive for the quality of the service. I regret not going somewhere else.
