DO NOT GO HERE WITHOUT A WEAPON! We were robbed at knife point. Same guy Lith Tran described and EXACT SAME TACTICS.

We were lucky to run and get away. He chased me with a large kitchen knife for 500 meters.

It’s not his first time and won’t be his last. This happened at 10-1030 am. We got away safely (save for a few cuts on our arms and legs from running through the bushes)

The thief wears a black hoodie and probably a mask when he approached. He asked u where we were from, then for money. THEN pulls out the weapon.

He was following us since nearly the beginning of the trail (shortly before the white cross) - we are certain of this because he asked for my partner’s Kanguro - which she took off and put in my backpack 5 mins into the hike.

Locals say it’s safe in the morning… when there are more people.

I’d recommend you buy a machete for 100 pesos. If you see anyone wearing a mask and a black hoodie… it’s almost certainly a robber

nice views, but quite a few paths are overgrown, rather rocky or with loose dirt, so be careful of footing and following tracks

My partner and I got robbed at knifepoint 2 days ago up at the top near the cross.
Our friend got robbed by a different man with a gun today at the same spot. I HIGHLY suggest not hiking here. They must scope you out from a highpoint on the trail and then follow you up to the top where you are alone.

ROBBED AT KNIFEPOINT!!
Don’t hike here, certainly not alone or unarmed. Approached at 1100 on April 7 222 by 25-30 y/o Mexican male in navy blue hooded sweatshirt w white writing on it. Yielded large kitchen knife, stole backpack (fortunately uninsured) after approaching saying, “Do you have the time?” Numerous robberies here recently (search online, AllTrails incl).
Here’s your warning!
Update: Stole iphone appeared next day briefly on iCloud at (17.0588600, -96.7361389, see pic) in Oaxaca market area. Enough time to activate “Lost Mode”. Perpetrator saw the number posted in message (“Reward if found, call ___”) to shortly thereafter send a link, presumably to extract $. Rather than negotiate with a criminal, opted for filing an insurance claim.

Warning about hiking up to Cerro del Fortin: We got mugged around 3pm last Sunday. Not too far from the planetarium on the nature trail, a local started to make conversation with us asking us in spanish where we were from and if we were hiking ..we responded in a reserved but friendly manner.. then suddenly asked us for money to which we were confused..it all became clear when he pulled out his big hunting knife from his front sweatshirt pocket. Young, tanned, short haircut, black sweatpants, black hoodie, black sneakers. He was alone but carrying a large knife. Knocked me to the ground, choked me and threatened to stab my stomach. He slashed my knee instead and took our wallets and phones and ran toward the mountain barrios. Please be safe. We were alert, not wearing flashy clothes, sober, and trying to blend in. It was broad daylight. Seems like many are desperate after this pandemic and willing to mug tourists. (We did file a police report but not much was done ...) Please please be careful. I recommend leaving your phones at home if you hike (or bringing a dummy phone) and only bringing a little cash in your sock.
