In this edition of weird eats we're getting pretty out there... we're gonna talk about the first time I ever ate an insect..

In my first few weeks in Mexico City at Kearney we were taken out to dinner by some of our local colleagues to @villamariamx an "authentic" touristy spot. This place was super cool and let's talk about why:
1. Ambiance: this place was humming and really gave a great experience for foreign people with a live mariachi band (see the second panel and note there are no sombreros, that is an American thing ????)
2. Weird eats / new things to try: one of the appetizers we ordered was guacamole with goat cheese and much to my surprise there were crickets on top! Crickets are not what you'd expect, it didn't add a whole lot of crunch just a bit of saltiness to an already delicious guac
3. Main dishes: I got a shrimp and squid medley covered in a guajillo chili sauce which was also delicious (third panel)
Bonus weird eat: not pictured but I also tried worm salt on top of chips which was pretty delicious won't lie!

If you're in cdmx and want to see a mariachi band over a nice dinner Villa Maria is your spot!!

Delicious dinner. A local colleague made all the food choices - so lots of new things to try. Excellent mezcal with the worm/chilli salt.

We did 10 or so different appetizers including ant eggs. They are very tasty. I would liken them to the herb u0026 butter rice-a-roni back in the states. The Spanish sayings on the walls and in the bathroom are entertaining. The service was attentive, place was clean, and the food was tasty. I would recommend this for a business dinner. 12/13/15

Delicious food, excellent mojito, warm and welcoming staff and the Mariachi were fantastic.

Excellent food and service. Very nice restaurant located in Santa Fe. Also very good to celebrate the new year.

La comida es maravillosa, e las porciones son buena; no demasiado grande. The food was wonderful and the portions are of perfect size. The atmosphere is really great with witty signs that fill the walls, live music at night, and great service! They also had a beer festival highlighting different local beers that were also delicious, and order dessert because they are great. I had the churros and shared with the group.
