Cuicuilco was a prominent community of more than 20,000 inhabitants that flourished before the appearance of Teotihuacán as an urban center, since pyramids and public monuments were already being built in Cuicuilco since 800 BC. Ceramics and other evidence suggest that the refugees from the volcanic catastrophe migrated north and became part of the population of Teotihuacán.

Today, a gigantic structure with a cylindrical base and a pyramidal shape remains as a witness of its existence, which was built in a strategic position, representing the first attempt among pre-Hispanic peoples to relate religious concepts with cosmic events, through a monumental creation.

The pyramid is the first large stone structure known in all of Mesoamerica, and also the first building conceived as a Horizon Calendar, from its top you can see the equinox behind the El Papayo Volcano, hence its historical and cultural importance.
