What a house, what rooms. Maybe the most inspiring place I've seen in terms of wanting to build your own home. Rodrigo has the architectural ideas, and Hileana or both of them keep finding ways to make the interior an enormous pleasure on the eyes. Geniuses. Everything seems to playfully fit, colours, forms, sizes. Space is created, filled but not occupied, in the most tasteful way. There are many delightful timber furniture pieces and they currently still impart such a great smell to the relatively new house. The big theme of the house is being inside and outside at the same time. One part of the house is open to the sky, and additionally there are multiple skylights. On the first day, I had to look up at one point to actually know if I was currently inside or outside, they've realised this so well. It's an absolutely audacious concept, especially since there can apparently be quite a bit of rainfall in San Cristóbal. In the cold months, this may also lead to the air feeling a bit chilly for sure, but there are plenty of cozy blankets around.
A bit of a shame the piano was not in working order. It was mainly one key which was really bad, but the whole piano needs a professional to tune it (and will probably keep needing to be tuned, in a house of changeable climate). The piano was one of the main motivational factors (apart from great reviews) which made me spend a bit over my normal budget. Not really being able to play it was a small disappointment.
I've had the privilege to meet Hileana and Rodrigo, and they are inspirational people as you would expect from the house, intelligent, multinational, great drive, business acumen, innovative, all while being parents to (three I think) kids as well.
The area feels very safe, it's perfectly situated just a few meters from the entrance to the busiest tourist street, but in a dead end so there is no traffic, and far enough removed from the bustle so there is very little noise.
They mentioned that they will also soon offer Mexican cooking classes, and the setup for it looks already felicitous.
It's a feast for the senses. I highly recommend you go there. Even if you have little to no affinity for design or architecture, I'm pretty sure it's hard to escape the charm of Casa Carmen.
