On a recent visit to Puebla I went to the workshop of Talavera de la Reyna in Cholula where I ordered a set of dinner plates, salad plates, and soup bowls to be shipped to me in the U.S. at considerable expense. I knew of the reputation of the company and did not anticipate any problems. To my surprise, when the items arrived I found that 7 of the dinner plates, 3 of the salad plates, and 3 soup bowls had noticeable flaws. I sent pictures of them to an archaeologist friend who is a specialist in Mexican ceramics. She concurred that they appeared to be seconds rather than first quality items. I contacted the company whose response was that the items are handmade and therefore flaws are to be expected. So warning! If you want fine quality ceramics, go to Uriarte in Puebla.
