We so wanted to love this place after we saw the menu online, as we love good tamales and this place seemed to have a good selection. We sat outside at a table and after ordering our drinks (and dinner), we waited, and waited and waited, and finally my wife’s beer arrived (a bit warm) and then I waited another 5 - 6 minutes until my beer (and micheleda) arrived. We thought that was a bit odd for it to take so long for our drinks to arrive, as we were the only customers, but no biggie (we thought).
I order two tamales (one mole and one green verde wrapped in plantains) and my wife ordered one original verde tamale (in corn husk). My two tamales came out on two plates and nothing for my wife. After a bit, I told my wife to start eating one of mine, as we both wanted to sample each other’s anyway. Time passed, our beers were empty, no one checked on us and we had eaten both tamales and we were sitting outside alone. We finally got one of the 4 employees attention (who were all inside) to order two more beers and my wife ordered another horeanadas tamale rojo. We were still anticipating her original tamale verde in corn husk to arrive at some point. (Did I mention that we were the ONLY customers at the restaurant)?
Well, we saw one of the employees with about 6 bottles of a different brand of beer come out, he put them in a bag and left. We thought this was kind of interesting and debated where he was going. Maybe they were out of Victoria, and he was going to exchange them for some? We were not sure. This was like 10 minutes later and we are still without our 2nd beers we had ordered. Then a bit later he returned to the restaurant and brought us our 2nd beers from the bag. We thought, well ok, at least these were cold!
We waited longer and longer and finally my wife’s horneada tamale in rojo arrived. Our 2nd beers were about empty, but at this point we were done. We completed her tamale (which by the way was delicious), but she never received her original verde tamale.
Here we sit with empty plates and beer bottles on our table and all the employees hidden inside, busy doing something. We waited a bit longer, then my wife gets up and walks into the restaurant and asked for the check.
They seem surprised, but quickly brought it out. Looking at it, sure enough, they charged us for the 5th tamale (that we never received) and they were in no hurry to come pick up the tab (or clean off the table that still had our dirty plates and empty beer bottles on it). So after a bit, I got up, went into the restaurant and let them know about the tamale we didn’t receive. The manager/owner guy quickly corrected the overcharge and I paid our bill and walked away disappointed that our service was so poor, tis the reason for the 1 star review.
The restaurant right next door was hopping with customers and service looked great, but for this night, we chose the wrong one to eat at and will have many laughs and memories in the days and weeks to come on the experience we had here.
